Tonight from here on out, we've got a 31% chance of light showers and maybe an isolated thunderstorm moving in from the north. Nothing heavy, but keep an eye out. Monday turns much nicer with partly sunny skies and highs near 71°F, though you might catch a brief shower in the afternoon (only 6% chance). Tuesday's the pick of the next few days: sunny, warming to 79°F, and basically dry.

What's driving all this? We've got an upper-level low pressure system, that river of fast air up around 30,000 feet that's been tilted in a way that's wringing moisture out of the atmosphere as it moves east. Tonight and Monday, that system's still close enough to stir up showers, especially over the mountains south of the Snake River Plain where daytime heating helps fuel thunderstorms. By Tuesday, the low starts to push away toward the northern plains, but a broad upper-level trough (a dip in that jet stream) sticks around and keeps temperatures running 10 to 15 degrees below normal through the short term. That's why we're looking at upper 70s instead of near 90 for late June.

Looking ahead, that trough will gradually slide east through the week, and as it does, we'll get more southwesterly flow aloft. That sets up a slow warming trend toward the Fourth of July, when the pattern finally locks in dry and near-normal temperatures. For now though, just expect things to stay a touch cooler than typical for this time of year.
