Right now we've still got a slim chance of a stray shower or thunderstorm tonight as that last bit of organized activity moves through, but most of Durham should stay dry after sunset. Tomorrow and Monday are looking pleasant, with highs near 90 and plenty of sun. But starting Wednesday, buckle up, because a significant heat wave is moving in that'll last through the holiday weekend. We're talking 95 to 100+ degree afternoons, which'll put us well into the hottest percentile of weather we see in a year. Nights won't bring much relief either, with lows stuck in the mid to upper 70s.

What's driving all this is an upper-level ridge of high pressure, that's a big dome of warm air aloft that'll be anchored over the Southeast by midweek. Think of it like a lid on a pot. When you have 500-millibar heights (that's the pressure level around 18,000 feet) running 594 to 597 decameters across the region, you've got some serious atmospheric stability and sinking motion that warms everything below it. The warmest 850-millibar air (around 5,000 feet up, where the real heat gets mixed down to us) is expected Friday, and forecast models show those temperatures climbing into the 23 to 26 Celsius range, which is in the 95th to 99th percentile of what we normally see. That means we're not just hot, we're historically hot for this time of year, and several daily record highs and record warm overnight lows are on the table.

The good news is this ridge should start weakening Saturday as the upper-level winds shift to a northwesterly flow. That'll let some relief seep back into central North Carolina, though we'll stay warmer than normal. More importantly, it'll open the door for afternoon thunderstorms to return by the weekend, and that could finally give us a break from the worst of the heat. This is a textbook setup where you can actually see the atmospheric mechanics playing out in the forecast, from the ridge that's building now to its breakdown a few days out.
