Tonight you'll see patchy fog develop, especially if any showers moved through your area earlier. By Monday afternoon, we'll flip from the cool stretch we've had into the heat. Monday tops out near 93 in Charleston with mostly sunny skies, then it gets serious from Tuesday onward. We're talking 98 on Tuesday with heat index values pushing toward 100 or higher by midweek, and those sticky overnight lows around 72 degrees won't give you much relief.

Here's what's driving this: a large dome of high pressure, that's basically a sprawling area of sinking air, is building into the Ohio Valley and mid-Atlantic. When air sinks, it warms, and it also suppresses any clouds or rain. At the same time, dew points (the amount of moisture in the air) will be sitting in the upper 60s to lower 70s, so even though the humidity won't be oppressive by summer standards, the sheer heat will feel brutal. The combination of heat and that moisture is what pushes the heat index so high. By Wednesday and Thursday, don't be surprised if it feels like the low 100s outside.

The good news is there's no significant rain in sight for Charleston until maybe next weekend, when the high pressure dome starts to weaken slightly. That's also the bad news if you need a break from the heat. The mountains might see isolated afternoon thunderstorms on Monday, but Charleston stays dry through Friday. This is genuinely dangerous heat, so take the usual precautions: drink water, get into air conditioning regularly, and check on older neighbors and family.
