Tonight stays mild and partly cloudy, but here's what's coming: Monday brings the heat. You'll hit 87 degrees with mostly sunny skies, and that's just the warm-up. Monday night a slight chance of rain showers develops as a warm front pushes through, then Tuesday cranks up to 93 degrees with full sunshine. The National Weather Service has already issued a Heat Advisory from noon Monday through Thursday evening because heat indices will exceed 100 degrees, especially Wednesday and Thursday when they could approach 105.

The meteorology here is straightforward and important to understand. High pressure is building to the southeast while a low-pressure system moves north across the Great Plains. That low is dragging a warm front right through our area, which acts like a conveyor belt hauling much warmer and more humid air up from the southwest. Once that warm front passes Monday evening, the high pressure takes over and locks in place for the rest of the week. That stalled setup is what keeps the heat relentless and overnight lows stuck in the mid to upper 70s, meaning almost no relief even after sunset. The combination of high daytime heat and warm nighttime temperatures is what makes a heat event truly dangerous.

Looking ahead, this pattern holds through Thursday with the most intense heat Wednesday and Thursday. By Friday the upper-level ridge that's been fueling this heat dome begins to break down, and a shortwave (a dip in the jet stream) could bring showers and thunderstorms back to the area. For now though, drink water, check on neighbors, and keep an eye on daily heat index forecasts as we get closer to the peak—this is real weather worth respecting.
