Tonight and through Tuesday, you're looking at mostly cloudy skies with highs in the low-to-mid 60s on Monday and Tuesday. The rain chance stays pretty low (under 15%), so you won't see much precipitation moving through Fairbanks. That cold front that's been working its way north has mostly cleared the area, and we're in that transition phase now where cooler air has settled in but the system itself is pushing toward the Brooks Range and North Slope.

Here's what's driving this pattern: a cold front and upper-level shortwave trough (a dip in the jet stream, that river of fast air around 30,000 feet) are lifting north across the state, with a broad low-pressure trough setting up over Northern Alaska. The front already brought some decent rain earlier today, and it's continuing to squeeze out scattered showers, but by the time most of that moisture gets to the highest elevations north and east of here, the heaviest action will be over the Brooks and Alaska Ranges. Down here in Fairbanks, we're just catching the tail end. Warmer southerly flow aloft is keeping upper-level dynamics pretty active, so we'll see isolated thunderstorms possible over the Upper Tanana and Fortymile country starting Monday afternoon.

Look for gradual warming by midweek as that trough pattern slowly softens and high pressure tries to edge in from the west and northwest. Even though scattered showers look possible through the week, your daily chances stay low. The real story this week is how that upper-level low lingers, keeping temperatures and instability slightly elevated and preventing any heat from building in until we get past Friday.
