Tonight and Monday you're looking at pleasant, dry weather in Hartford. Any scattered showers around the region will wrap up by sundown, and then fog and low clouds will move back in overnight. Don't be surprised if you wake up Monday morning to some patchy fog, but it'll burn off by mid-morning and you'll have mostly sunny skies and highs around 88°F. It's a nice springboard before things get serious later in the week.

The setup here is pretty straightforward: a weak high pressure system is sitting near the Massachusetts coast, and it's keeping things calm and stable through Monday. What's interesting is that marine moisture layer out over the Atlantic. During the day, the sun heats up the land and that moist air tries to stay offshore. But once the sun sets and the boundary layer (that lowest part of the atmosphere where we live) cools off and decouples from the warmer air above, the fog and low clouds get permission to move back inland. It's a classic sea-to-land moisture transport that happens almost every night when conditions are right.

By Tuesday, a shortwave disturbance will approach from the northwest, bringing a 24% chance of showers and thunderstorms by afternoon and evening. That'll be your warning that a much bigger pattern change is underway. By Wednesday, an enormous ridge of high pressure—basically a dome of sinking air—will build in from the south, and it'll stick around through Friday. That's when the real heat arrives, with temperatures likely to exceed 95°F and potentially pushing past 100°F in the Connecticut River Valley. The National Weather Service has already issued an Extreme Heat Watch for Wednesday through Friday, so this isn't a borderline situation.
