A decaying thunderstorm complex that's been moving southeast out of Wisconsin could clip the Kalamazoo area early Monday morning with a slight 19% chance of showers or thunderstorms, but it's weakening as it tracks over Lake Michigan, so confidence is low. Once that system clears, you'll see mostly sunny skies by afternoon and the real story kicks in: extreme heat. Highs Monday reach 94°F and climb to 96°F by Tuesday, with dewpoints in the 70s making the air feel sticky and oppressive.

What's driving this setup is a building upper ridge over the Great Lakes—think of it as a massive dome of sinking air that's parked itself over the region. This ridge suppresses normal weather patterns and traps heat, which is why the models show H8 temperatures (that's the height of the 500-millibar level, basically measuring how strong the upper-level pattern is) climbing significantly over the next few days. The same ridge also acts like a roadblock, forcing weather systems to stay north or take longer paths, which means you won't get much relief.
