What's driving all this? There's a high-pressure system parked over the eastern U.S., and a stalled frontal boundary slowly sinking down the Eastern Seaboard. That setup creates what meteorologists call a sea breeze convergence zone—basically, wind from the Gulf collides with wind from the Atlantic, and that collision zone gets squeezed right over central Florida and triggers afternoon thunderstorms. The atmosphere is also pretty moist (we call that "near-average PWATs," or precipitable water), which fuels storm development. You're looking at heat index values around 100 to 105 degrees this whole week because of that strong high-pressure dome sitting overhead.
