Tonight stays mostly clear and warm at 79°F with a light breeze, then Monday cranks up to 95°F under sunny skies. You'll feel the heat through the rest of this week, too. An Extreme Heat Warning is locked in through Friday, and we're talking heat indices of 100-110°F daily as humidity stays high. The overnight lows will only drop to the upper 70s, so there's basically no cooling relief after sunset.

Here's what's driving this pattern: a dome of high pressure (meteorologists call it an "upper ridge") has parked itself over the Southeast and is spreading westward. This ridge is like a traffic jam for weather systems. It forces warm, moist air to keep flowing north from the Gulf of Mexico on south and southwesterly winds. At the same time, there's downsloping flow coming off the Rockies, which compresses and warms the air even more. Those tight pressure gradients are why we're seeing gusts up to 30 mph.

The stubborn part? That ridge isn't going anywhere until late in the week. Topeka's on the western edge of this system, so we'll stay in the heat engine the whole time. There's a tiny glimmer of hope with a weak wave of cooler air trying to push through around Sunday into Monday, but even that's marginal. Bottom line: heat dominates the forecast through the weekend, and overnight temperatures won't give us much relief either.
