The weak frontal boundary that triggered scattered storms this afternoon has pushed south of Virginia Beach, so you're on the dry side of things now. Tomorrow stays pleasant—some morning fog will clear out, then mostly cloudy skies with highs around 80°F and virtually no rain chance. Same story Monday night into Tuesday, when you'll see mostly sunny skies and highs near 83°F. It's a quiet stretch, meteorologically speaking.

What's making this setup so predictable is high pressure building in from the northeast and settling over the region through Tuesday. When you've got a strong high-pressure system overhead, it acts like a lid on the atmosphere, suppressing any rising air and storms. That dome of high pressure is so strong that it's going to stick around all week and actually intensify, but that's where the story gets dramatic. Behind this high pressure system, an upper-level ridge (that's the shape of the jet stream, that river of fast air around 30,000 feet) is going to build from Tennessee northeast toward the Appalachians by Thursday and Friday. When you stack a surface high with a strong upper ridge in the same spot, you trap hot air and it just keeps cooking.

Starting Wednesday, that heat wave kicks in hard, and by Thursday and Friday it could rival the worst heat event since July 2012. We're talking heat indices potentially hitting 105 to 110 degrees, with some spots even hotter. The coastal areas won't catch much of a break either—yes, you'll get some seabreeze cooling in the late afternoons, but the combination of heat and moisture off the ocean can make heat indices just as brutal as inland. For now, enjoy the comfortable Monday and Tuesday—it's the calm before a very hot week ahead.
