Tonight you'll stay mostly cloudy with temps dropping to 60°F, and winds should ease out after the gusty afternoon we've had. Monday looks pretty good for the valley—sunny to partly sunny, warming to 82°F with only an 11% chance of showers. The models show some moisture trying to work in from the northeast early Monday morning, but Yakima should stay dry. Tuesday stays sunny and warm at 82°F with minimal rain chance.

What's driving all this is a closed upper-level low pressure system that's parked over the Montana-Alberta border right now. As it slowly drifts east tonight and Monday, it's sending shortwave passages (little ripples of upper-level energy) down toward us. Those ripples are bringing showers to the Blue Mountains and eastern portions of the Columbia Basin, but here in Yakima we're just catching the dry side of the pattern. The breezy westerly winds you felt this afternoon came from a tightening pressure gradient between that upper low and a surface low developing nearby—basically, tight pressure squeezes air through the Cascade gaps like water through a nozzle. By midweek, that troughing pattern hangs tough with occasional light mountain showers, keeping us cooler than normal (about 5 to 15 degrees below average) and the winds hanging around 15–25 mph.

By Friday the trough finally pushes east and we get a warming trend heading into the weekend with near-normal temperatures and dry conditions. In the meantime, enjoy the pleasant Monday and Tuesday—you're in a sweet spot between the shower systems affecting the mountains and eastern valleys.
